Project Suggestions for Safe Harbor

After visiting Safe Harbor and talking with Julie about the projects she has in store for us, I am very excited to get started on our projects! Julie mentioned one main project that I am very interested to help start up called Relationship Education Project. This part of Safe Harbor, also known as REP, is a previous program known as Meghan’s project that is being re-vamped in order to reach more victims and teens with questions about domestic violence. Our main goal in the REP launch will be to make the public aware that the program is going by a new name and let the public know the program’s main purpose. Hopefully, a website for REP can be launched and ideas to become part of the counseling program can be established.

REP is part of many programs that offer counseling, which many people in the community do not realize is part of the services Safe Harbor provides. With our help, Julie hopes that we can make services of Safe Harbor better known to the public. We want to community to be aware that the programs offered do reach out to men, also, although not as common as their women’s services.

We want to help with Domestic Violence Awareness month in October. We also hope to bring speakers to Clemson’s campus in order to make domestic violence programs more accessible to college students who may be in abusive relationships.

In order to make the public more aware of Domestic Violence Awareness month and the fact that their national color is purple, having a drink night at a bar in Clemson or the student nightlife area would be a fun way to raise awareness. All sororities and fraternities could be invited to make sure we have plenty of college members present, and we could pass out flyers on campus. The best venue may be Tiger Park, an outside area where drinks, both alcoholic and non, could be served. We could even serve purple drinks to raise awareness of the color, and ask those that come to wear purple. If we wanted to raise money, drink tickets could be sold for alcoholic drinks. This could be our main event for college student awareness for the semester.

Setting up nights at fast food places around campus and throughout Pickens county could help raise awareness also, and raise money in the process. Once days are set for these events, we should tell as many people as possible through facebook and twitter or email. Brochures could also be handed out with information on the new REP program that we are trying to promote. Hopefully, these ideas will put the new programs out in the open and raise some money for Safe Harbor at the same time.
